Bird & Wildlife
This group has been going for many years but has only recently included ‘Wildlife’ in its description. Naturally before the renaming the members didn’t ignore the wildlife but now they actively identify and record what they see; although the main focus is still on birds.
We are lucky to have many knowledgeable members, which makes bird identification easier but regularly we have to refer to our field guides. Wildflowers cause a bit more of a problem, but we are gradually learning (or relearning) their names and we have found that our knowledge of damselflies has room for improvement! We are lucky to have two members with powerful telescopes and also some who can take good wildlife photographs. Reports are written monthly and sent to group members and also placed on the website.
Jointly run by Joy Deacon and Diane Caulkett the group meets monthly on the second Wednesday. The location of each outing depends to some extent on the time of year (i.e. whether it is the breeding season, migrating season etc). We have some favourites especially for winter where the reserves such as Hanningfield & Abberton Reservoirs have warm and welcoming visitor centres as well as many birds to observe. Other locations include Fingringhoe Wick, Bradwell-on-Sea, Wick Farm, Burnham-on-Crouch, and Abbotts Hall Farm, near Colchester.
Shortly the group will visit the WW1 airfield at Stow Maries where we shall have a guided tour and be shown the habitats of the wildlife there. We are also introducing new locations such as Langdon Reserve and Cudmore Grove, East Mersea.
New members are always welcome, as are any members of the U3A Burnham-on-Crouch who would like to join us on any of the outings.
