Film Club
The Film Club will shortly be celebrating its first anniversary and over the past year the group has watched a variety of films including a mix of foreign films. When it was formed there were too many interested people for one group and unfortunately again for 2016 membership of the Film Club is limited.
The first film Terry chose was a 2005 Oscar nominated Swedish film with English subtitles, ‘Som I Himlen’. Terry says it is a little sad, a little happy, a little romantic but one that leaves the viewers with a really good feeling. After the showing the group members considered the film and thought it ‘compelling’, ‘moving’ and ‘delightful’.
Refreshments are served during the evening when films are considered for the next month’s meeting and also interesting and knowledgeable discussions take place mixed with memories of films and cinemas of the past.
‘Born Yesterday’, with the Oscar winner Judy Holliday starring, was the next film shown, followed the next month by ‘Cactus Flower’ also starring an Oscar winner, Goldie Hawn. Terry says they are fascinating contrasts between two ‘dumb’ blonds who each won an Oscar in their respective pictures.
The group then selected for the next month’s film the Japanese/German masterpiece ‘Cherry Blossom’, described by the critics as ‘remarkable’, ‘beautiful’, ‘deeply rewarding’, and it was!!
The Woody Allen film ‘Radio Days’ brought loud laughter from the group. It is a film of humour and nostalgia on the impact of radio in the 1940’s, and yes – our clothes and furniture were like that! The following months film showed a wide contrast from ‘The Lives of Others’, a thought provoking and moving film of love, warped desire and betrayal under a frightening Communist East German Government. On a lighter tone, the group saw the hit Hollywood musical ‘Music Man’ with spectacular dance and song sequences.
In December Terry’s group met for a Christmas drink and members universally expressed their pleasure at the past year’s events.
As you can see the Film Club has much variety in its choice. The January club night had 5 award-winning films from which to choose and an additional 500 available – quite a choice.
The group meets on the last Friday monthly and if you would like further details do contact the group leader Terry Quinlan on 01621 785384
