Table Tennis 2
In November 2013 I visited the only Table Tennis Group we had that had been running for almost a decade. It is a popular group meeting weekly on Mondays, where members pay a lump sum for their forthcoming sessions, which encourages commitment and therefore a good turnout at each session. However, the group is full and rarely do vacancies occur for new members: so in January 2014 David Toe & Adrian Summerfield got together and formed a second group. Initially it was to accommodate members on a waiting list who couldn’t come to Monday sessions but could manage a Wednesday, and secondly for those who played on a Monday but would like to play on another day as well. Wednesday was chosen with play weekly between 2.30-4.30pm.
This new Wednesday group differs from the Monday group in that it is a ‘play and pay on the day’ group with the cost at just £1. Adrian, who runs the group, says that between six and eight people regularly attend – when I visited there were 8 which is ideal as everyone can play at the same time; but having smaller numbers always gives an opportunity for singles games One member mentioned to me how strenuous it was and judging by the sweat dripping from his forehead I could only agree. It was surprisingly serious table tennis that to me seemed a high standard. I was invited to play but after my previous somewhat disapointing efforts, I declined. Although the players were serious the games were played in a light-hearted spirit and there were bursts of laughter.
Three tables are available so there is ample room for anyone who would like to play. Adrian has some bats that can be used although most members bring their own.
